As we close out the year we want to thank you – our Members – for the role you have played in what was a very exciting first year of operations for The MLC. By registering accurate and complete musical works data, participating in webinars, providing us with valuable feedback and much more, you have embodied the spirit and intent of The MLC’s "Play Your Part" initiative. And as a result of your efforts, our Membership has nearly doubled since January, more works are being added to our database and royalty distributions continue to increase. Important groundwork has been laid this year, and as The MLC evolves into the next phase of its operations, we hope that you will take a sense of pride in what we have accomplished - together - in 2021.

The MLC completed its ninth and final monthly royalty distribution of the year on December 14. Once again, the distribution was right on-time.

This month's distribution primarily covered newly reported usage that

took place in September. The total of all royalty pools reported to The MLC for this cycle was just over $56.5 million. We were able to match between 83 and 84 percent of that amount to songs currently registered in our database, which is consistent with our match rates over the past several months. After deducting royalties for usage covered by voluntary licenses maintained by DSPs with rightsholders, we collected more than $50.4 million in royalties and distributed over $35.1 million to our Members.

The remaining royalties still pending distribution break down as follows:

• $9.4 million in royalties for uses we have not been able to match to registered works;
• $5.5 million in royalties for shares of matched works that have not yet been registered (or claimed) by our Members; and
• $365k in matched royalties that are on legal hold.

In addition to these amounts, The MLC also distributed another $2.6 million in royalties from previously unmatched or unclaimed uses that we were now able to match to data you subsequently submitted to us after we completed the initial distribution cycle for that usage. This brings the total amount of royalties we have distributed this year as a result of reprocessing to more than $14 million. These reprocessed royalties show the value of reviewing and updating your data.
